More and more grocery store chains are giving flu shots this year, and so far, one chain is also offering at-home COVID-19 saliva tests.
Today, Albertsons announced that it would be making at-home COVID-19 saliva test kits available to customers, thanks to a new partnership with the at-home saliva COVID-testing company, Phosphorus. So far, Phosphorus is one of two saliva tests to be approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA. The other one to be approved for similar circumstances is, SalivaDirect, which was created by researchers at Yale School of Public Health.

Now, you can get a test without having to walk into a testing facility, urgent care, or doctor’s office. Here’s how it works: First, you go online to schedule a test, but instead of getting swabbed at Albertsons Pharmacy, you’ll instead pick up the test and take it directly home (another option is to have it delivered straight to your door).
Next, follow the instructions on how to swab yourself and then put the kit into a prepaid package and drop it off at your local FedEx Drop Box or call 1-800-463-3339 to schedule a pickup for later that day. Your results will be delivered to you either by way of a text message or email.
The downside? The test is currently priced at $139.99 and is not covered by insurance. Currently, the test is only available in select markets, however, Albertsons does plan to make it more widely available across the U.S. by October.
“Customers appreciate the convenience and innovation of taking the test from their own home,” Dan Salemi, GVP Albertsons Cos. Pharmacy, said in a statement. “The saliva test is easy to use and comfortable. Patients are never more than a phone call away from our pharmacy’s guidance and care. And the at-home model can help ease the burden on a stressed health care system.”
If you need to get tested for COVID-19 and live near an Albertsons grocery store, this could be a great resource. That is, if you can afford it.
