If you love ice cream on a hot summer’s day, you may want to think twice before you order a shake or McFlurry at your nearest McDonald’s. According to one former employee who took to TikTok to reveal some secrets from the fast food chain’s kitchen, the ice cream machine is a source of food you may wish to avoid.
For starters, Dessy Joseph, a former McDonald’s employee with the TikTok handle “jodessy,” says that due to the difficulty of the task—they can take upwards of four hours to properly sanitize—employees rarely cleaned the machine they use to make McFlurries, sundaes, and ice cream cones. Another reason: “Dead flies and dirt collect at the top of the ice cream machine, so if you slide the top off without wiping it first, all those little buggies go in the ice cream mix,” she said.
Oy. For what it’s worth, it’s not the first time that McDonald’s employees have sounded the alarm on what has become a controversial appliance for the restaurant chain. Given that the machine takes so long to clean, many McDonald’s fans have noted that they’ve pulled into the restaurants’ drive-thru to find the machine inexplicably “broken.”
“Btw, I used to work in McDonalds,” tweeted one former employee last year. “The ice cream machine was never broke, it just takes 3 hours to clean so we used to say it was broke so we didn’t have to serve you lot. Cheers x.”
In addition to her warning about the ice cream machine, Joseph did reveal one really handy trick for getting the “freshest” possible food when you order at McDonald’s: Always ask for items that require “customizations”—such as a burger without onions or cheese.
After all, orders like these require the staff to make them from scratch immediately.
“During the lunch rush we would make a certain amount of food that were popular items and leave them on the belt,” she said. “It was heated so you couldn’t really tell if your food had been left on the belt.” And for more great inside info about America’s most popular fast food chain chain, make sure you read these 30 Amazing McDonald’s Facts That Will Blow Your Mind!
